5 Red Flags When Hiring a Plumber in Ontario

These warning signs could save you from a costly plumbing disaster. Know what to watch for before you hand over a deposit.

Plumbing problems are urgent, stressful, and expensive. That combination makes homeowners vulnerable to contractors who cut corners, overcharge, or disappear mid-job. Here are five red flags that should stop you from hiring a plumber in Ontario.

1. They Demand Full Payment Upfront

No legitimate plumber requires full payment before work begins. Standard practice is a small deposit (10-15% maximum) with the balance due upon completion. If a plumber demands half or full payment before lifting a wrench, walk away.

What to do instead: Agree on a payment schedule tied to milestones. For a major job, this might be 10% deposit, 40% at rough-in, and 50% upon completion and inspection.

2. They Cannot Provide a License Number

While plumbing is not a compulsory trade in Ontario (meaning a license is not legally required to practice), reputable plumbers are registered with Skilled Trades Ontario and carry proper insurance. They should be able to show you:

  • Business registration
  • Liability insurance certificate
  • WSIB clearance certificate
  • If they hesitate or refuse, that is a red flag.

    3. Their Reviews Tell Different Stories on Different Platforms

A 4.9 on Google but complaints on the BBB suggests review manipulation. Cross-platform consistency is one of the strongest indicators of genuine quality. ProScore analyzes review patterns across multiple platforms to detect inconsistencies.

What to look for: Check at least two independent platforms. If ratings diverge significantly, dig deeper into the negative reviews for specifics.

    4. They Give a Quote Without Seeing the Job

Any plumber who quotes a price over the phone without inspecting the work is either overcharging (padding for unknowns) or undercharging (planning to hit you with change orders). A reputable plumber will insist on seeing the job before quoting.

What to do: Get three in-person quotes. Compare scope, materials, and timeline — not just price.

    5. They Pressure You Into an Immediate Decision

"This price is only good today" or "I have another job starting tomorrow" are high-pressure sales tactics. Legitimate contractors understand that homeowners need time to compare quotes and check references. Urgency manufactured by the contractor — not by the plumbing emergency — is a warning sign.
